Two escape as fuel tanker plunges into gutter in Anambra
Two persons narrowly escaped death in an accident involving an articulated vehicle along Awka-Enugu expressway.
The accident which occurred around 6.55pm involved the Tanker (Mack) with registration number ENU917ZK, laden with Diesel.
Confirming the incident, Sector Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Pascal Anigbo attributed it to brake failure.
He said, "At about 6.55pm today Saturday 18 July, 2020 a Tanker (Mack) with registration number ENU917ZK, laden with Diesel crashed into a gutter near the government house in Awka, along Awka-Enugu expressway.
"Preliminary investigation reveals that the crash was caused by "Brake Failure". Two male adults were involved in the crash. One sustained light injury, no death recorded.
"The scene has been cordoned off and traffic diverted by the FRSC rescue team from Anambra State Sector Command. The situation is presently under control.
"The Sector Commander FRSC, Andrew A. Kumapayi is personally supervising the rescue operation. Also on ground are operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Anambra State Fire Service.
Plans are in top gear for the trans-loading of the product.
"Kumapayi reiterates the importance of ensuring that vehicle owners and drivers, especially articulated vehicles, check and service their vehicles regularly and ensure their brakes are perfectly in good working condition, before embarking on any trip. Road traffic crashes are avoidable."
