If You've Eaten Roasted Corn This Year, Then This Is For You.

Roasted corn is now regularly taken by people since farmers started harvesting corn in their farmland. In fact, hardly will you go out without you seeing at least two to three persons eating corn on the street especially in public transport. But as much as you eat it, it is very important to know its health benefits and the side effects when the in-take is too much. 

Maize, which has Zea Mays as its scientific name, is a juicy, sweet, yellow kernels of health. It is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous people in Southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago. 

Before I proceed into telling you what you stand to gain when you eat roasted corn, it's pertinent for you to know a little about what you eat.  


Corn contains Vitamins B which are very important to our overall health. It has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with the total production of maize surpassing that of wheat or rice. These corns are consumed directly by humans and are mostly used for corn ethanol, animal feed, and other maize products like corn starch and corn syrup. 

According to research, in 2014, the total world production was about 1.04billion tonnes. Also, studies showed that the oldest surviving maize types are those of the Mexican highlands and the word "Maize" is derived from Spanish form of indigenous 'Taino' word for the plant. 

However, Maize is preferred in formal, scientific, and international usage because it refers specifically to this one grain unlike corn, which has a complex variety of meanings that vary by context and geographic region. 

Without any further ado, corn can be roasted, boiled, grilled or microwaved, or steamed. 

Health benefits of eating roasted corn

1. It aids Digestion because of its high fiber content. 

2. Contains valuable B vitamins important for our health.  

3. Contains essential minerals like zinc, magnesium, copper, iron and manganese. 

4. Corns, however, has starchy nutrients. 

5. A good source of antioxidant carotenoid, lutein and zeaxanthin which promote healthy calories. 

With all these benefits derivable from corn, one will think there can't be any darker side to corn, whereas there is. Some of the Side Effects of Roasted Corn are:

1. High intake of roasted corn can lead to Tooth Decay. 

2. It causes Osteoporosis 

3. High intake causes Indigestion and Stomach Upset 

4. Increases Weight

5. Risk of Pellagra

6. Intestinal Irritation and Diarrhea

7. Not too good for people suffering from diabetics.
