Kogi Community Ignores Social Distancing Order, Celebrates New Yam Festival

Ihima community in Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State, on Sunday ignored the state government order on social distancing and marked its annual new yam festival.

The residents of the community ignored the government directive on social distancing and came out en masse to mark the 2020 new yam festival and participated in all the cultural rites; traditional dance in stages, whipping amongst able bodied men of the community and the visiting of the god of the land known as 'Ori-Ihima'.

The new yam festival known as 'Echori' marks the beginning of harvesting, and selling of new yams in the community.

Brief History Of Echori Festival In Ihima

History has it that the new yam festival was founded by a clan known as 'Akuta' clan who came to settle in Ihima district from okengwe district of Okene local government area.

The clan of course went to hill and discovered the god, they reported it to the eldest clan in the district, Emani Clan who immediately got other clans informed and it was unanimously agreed among other clans that Emani being the eldest should take custodianship of the Staff of Office.

They equally agreed that other clans ought to be involved so that they could render their constant assistance. But the involvement of the Six clans may be too monotonous and more so that some of the clans were of the same mother which invariably means that one of them should be represented.

Other children from other mothers equally resolved to just send a representative. In short, The trio of ( Ure, Ohueta and Odumi clans) who had one mother agreed among others things, that Ohueta Clan should represent them while Ohiongwa and Oha clans who are of the same mother agreed that Oha clan should represent them too.

This is the reason why the three clans (Emani, Ohueta and Oha Clan) were bonafide priests of "ORI" Ihima.

 The historical Market

Ohu'Adopisa was introduced by late Pa Adopisa Akenu of the blessed Memory out of sympathy for Farmers, traders and others during Eche'ori Festival in Ihima which became historical Market in Ebiraland, Kogi Central senatorial district where new yams will be seen first. The market bring thousands of people together annually and boost revenue generation of the local government.

The then eminent traditionalists unanimously agreed that in the course of worship "Ori" (god) all market should be closed down throughout the festive period which is three days. Due to poor means of disseminating information then, the information could not get to the neighbouring communities who patronized Ihima Central Market.

On the day of the market, they came with their farm produces as usual, unfortunately they met the market closed, out of sympathy, late Adai Adopisa Akenu instructed them to sell their farm produce in his compound pending the time Central Market will open.
