Seeing the temperature gauge of your car rising beyond the normal level is about one of the most frightening things that can happen when driving on the road. This is because you know the car is about to abandon you by the roadside in the middle of your journey. Truth is, if you can take the right steps, you might be able to the nearest service location.
When overheating is not well managed, it does not only damages the car, it poses danger to the life of the driver and other occupants of the vehicle. The question now is, what are the right steps to take when a car is overheating?
Whenever your car is overheating, take these five steps immediately;
1. Turn off the air conditioner
Turning off the air conditioner is about one of the wisest steps to take when you see the temperature gauge of your car exceeding the normal level. The air conditioning system in your car exerts more pressure on the car's engine thereby generating more heat. Once it is turned down, it gives the engine some breathing space, thus increasing the time it will take before the car will finally stop.
2. Turn on the car heater
It sounds ridiculous, right? But you need to understand that turning on the heater simply means opening more outlets for the engine's heat to escape. It is the heat in the car engine that normally fuels the heater, allowing the heater to be on helps the engine to cool down.
3. Pullover and off the car engine as soon as you can
Once you can get to a place where you can get assistance. This might be very easy if you are driving within a city but if you are on a distant journey, you may have to stop the car before getting to the place where help will be available. Remember to allow the engine to cool down for like 30 minutes before opening the hood to avoid injuries.
4. Apply coolant
Once the engine has cooled down, you can open the hood and check the coolant level. If necessary you can pour the coolant into the proper reservoir. In some cases, doing this can enable the car to drive to the nearest place where you can get help. Note: always ensure you have a small bottle of coolant or water inside your car.
5. Call for a tow truck if necessary
If you find out there is a problem with the radiator then you should get a professional to help you fix it. Most problems that have to do with car radiators can be fixed quickly but in some cases, it may require more time and even warrant you tow the car. In such serious cases, you should look for a tow truck and tow the car to a safe place for the necessary repairs.
