The government of Lagos State has confirmed that the palliative works on the alternative routes highlighted for traffic management during the proposed rehabilitation of the 3rd Mainland Bridge are rounding up in readiness for the partial closure scheduled to begin Friday,July 24 , 2020.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Transportation of Lagos State, the six-month repair work to be undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works and housing is aimed at repairing the worn-out expansion joints on the bridge construction.
The Transportation Commissioner, Dr.Frederic Oladeinde, while answering questions posed about some failed sections of the alternative routes, stated that Iddo inwards Carter Bridge, Market inward Herbert Macaulay road, Herbert Macaulay road by Abeokuta lane, Herbert Macaulay by Cemetery and Apapa inward Oyingbo were all set.
Oladeinde further clarified that the first step of bridge reconstruction will focus on Oworonshoki inner Lagos Island in the morning with traffic diversion from 12a.m. to 1 p.m. while the Lagos Island inner Oworonshoki would redirect traffic in the afternoon from 1 p.m. to 12 p.m
Although notifying motorists of various options for managing their journeys, the Commissioner advised motorists going from Osborne Road to Ikeja and Ikorodu Lane,Ikoyi in the morning to take advantage of carter Bridge to access Eko Bridge via Ijora Olopa that will take them via Funsho Williams Avenue to Doman Long Bridge to Ikorodu, or to use Carter Bridge to Iddo via Oyingbo to Herbert Macaulay to Jibowu to connect Ikorodu Lane.
From Victoria Island, Oladeinde advisedmotorists to use Ozumba Mbadiwe Roadto Falomo
Mostly in afternoon, road users arriving on Lagos Island are advised to use Ojota on Ikorodu Road to access Funsho Williams Avenue via Eko Bridge /Apongbon Axis or to use Ikorodu Road to enter the Fadeyi / jibowu / yaba Axis to get to Carter Bridge via Alfred Rewane to Old Kingsway Road, Osborn to Ilubirin and Catter Bridge.
He advised them to take the Bonny Camp to Independence Bridge to Marina Bridge via Apongbon to Eko Bridge, Ijora Olopa, Iddo and Oyingboas a second choice for this group
Similarly, the Commissioner claimed that motorists can also use Oshodi / Charity to access Cappa via Age Motor Road to link Ilupeju Bypass or Mushin to town planning Road to link Ikorodu Road or Moshalasi / Idi-Oro from Mushin to Funsho Williams Avenue to connect Eko Bridge to Apongbon or use Empire Road to access Yaba to connect the Oyingbo-Iddo Axis.
In the same way, it is recommended that motorists arriving from the International Airport to Lagos use Oshodi-oke to get to Town Planning to connect Ikorodu Avenue
Oladeinde reported that repair work is underway on the remaining traffic diversion routes highlighted to boost free traffic flow along the corridor during rehabilitation works.
As a way to minimize high vehicle flows during the closure, the commissioner advised motorists who do not have urgent assignments on the island to avoid the area from
Friday, July 24 , 2020, while those who have to visit the area should consider using dedicated BRT / LBSL busses to further alleviate traffic jams on the repair route.
He implored road users to comply with the State Traffic Management Authority(LASTMA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on the traffic directions set out in order to minimize traffic inconvenience and ensure smooth and uninterrupted flow of bridge work
