Earlier last month the federal government of Nigeria revealed plan of disengaging the N-power beneficiaries of batch A and B. This plan according to the government was to create a serene environment and a less cost opportunity for the rest unemployed youths of the country who are yet to benefit from the job scheme.
Npower is a job Creation program that has be in existence since the beginning of President Muhammed Buhari's administration. Fortunately, the batch A and B were the ones to be recruited for the Npower at the start of the programme. The beneficiaries in batch A and batch B are thousands in number.
In other not to return back thousands of people to an idle state of living, the government is considering given out loan to those batches that will be disengage in due. The loan is to enable them have something doing as they continue with their lives after disengagement from Npower job.
This loan to be offered to the disengaging Npower beneficiaries is known as GEEP loan: GEEP simply mean government enterprise empowerment programme. It is an initiative by the Federal Government of Nigeria to avail financial inclusion and access to micro credit for Nigerians at the down of the economic pyramid. GEEP focus on providing capital to beneficiaries in a very accessible way to grow their business.
The government planned to be giving out this GEEP loan to all beneficiaries of various categories in the Npower batch A and B who would got disengaged from Npower Job.
My Opinion:
It doesn't seems to be a wise decision if somebody who can work and be employed in a health sector or ICT sector got a business loan to start a business. It is here this article stand to opine that only beneficiaries of Npower agro should be given the loan while the remaining disengaged categories be offered a permanent job in various sectors in the country.
Why it should be considered a good plan to offer the agro beneficiaries the GEEP loan: firstly, agro beneficiaries has a good coverage of knowledge in agricultural related areas. Therefore, providing them loan means they have somewhere to invest it on, they can build their own farmland from the loan, those skills they acquired during training can help them setting up agricultural businesses. Those who already have a farmland to develop it and even considered extending his or her farm.
But what come of the other categories like the Npower health or tech. Loan to me is not what they really need, what business has health or tech trained them to set up. It would be of benefit if the government absorb them into any permanent job available in the country. Giving them loan is not a wise decision.
GEEP loan should be for only Agro beneficiaries while other be considered for a more permanent jobs.
