Ngozi Okonjo Iweala:She is on a path to break the jinx as the first African to become WTO president

She is known a renowned diplomat per excellence Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala is a development economist and former two-time Finance Minister of Nigeria, .Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been nominated as the candidate for the job of Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

The role of Director-General of the WTO has never been held by an African, and although others, such as Kenya’s Amina Mohamed, are noted as viable options, a solid case can be made for Okonjo-Iweala as being the strongest African candidate.

Okonjo-Iweala has over 30 years of development and financial expertise under her belt. Her 25-year career with the World Bank Group culminated in her rise to the second top position in the organization as Managing Director, from 2007-2011.

She was a former finance  minister for two different administration. One for Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and the other for Doctor Goodluck Ebele Jonathan(Both are former president of Nigeria). She spearheaded negotiations with the Paris Club of creditors that led to the wiping out of $30bn of Nigeria’s debt.

During her second term, she was responsible for leading reform that enhanced government transparency and strengthened institutions against corruption, including the implementation of the GIFMS (Government Integrated Financial Management System). She has good lobbying ability, and her reform credentials, makes her a compelling candidate.

She is currently among the board of directors of Twitter and Gavi(Global alliance for vaccination and immunization). Her integrity and disposition to integrity has remain intact over the years-she has never been indicted of any wrong doing. She has maintained a disposition base on good track record and discipline. This is what propels her that favoured her nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari, as Nigeria’s candidate for the position of the Director-General.

I called on all African to support her and we hope she will use her experience and expertise to bear in developing and improving African economy especially this time that there is a blue print for the promotion of African continental free trade agreement.
