Recall that the minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi while inspecting the Itakpe-Warri rail line made mention of some plans by the ministry, According to him their are plans to hike the price of the Kaduna-Abuja rail line if it is eventually reopened for operations.
He stated that, the need for the price increase was neccesary since there is going to be a downsize of passengers per each coach, to maintain the protocols of social distancing to prevent the spread of covid-19.
The capacity of a single coach is 88 downsizing it will automatically means that each will only carry 40. The minister also said all passengers coming into any of the station is required to come along with a personal hand sanitizer, and must wear a nose mask at all times.
The Abuja-Kaduna train services before the COVID-19 pandemic, the ticket for a first-class express trip used to go for N3000 but may now be sold for N6000, first-class normal trip N2500, now N5000, economy express trip N1,500, now N3000 and economy normal trip N1,300 will be sold for N2600.
This rail station is mostly patronized by students of tertiary institutions within Kaduna and Abuja respectively. As a student using that rail station was the most secured route.
During this covid-19 pandemic most parents have not been working or even paid reasonably, increasing the price of rail fee will make things more harder for students and parents.
Some small bussines owners use this means to get to abuja fast and get back to kaduna and vice versa, this rail station has positively affected especially in price and time off arrival. The ministry needs to subsidize this price for them, because all these small medium enterprise(SME) are just recovering from this hard hit of covid-19.
The price to travel by road has also been increased by drivers, the only hope poor masses have left is the government, and even the government is now planning to increase there fare price too.
The kaduna-Abuja expressway has not been smooth for road users for sometime now, there have been series of kidnappings, and other criminal acts carried out along that expressway. Although the Nigeria Police force have been carrying out successful operations to prevent those happenings, but Many Nigerians find refuge with those rail stations.
Federal government and ministry of transportation should consider the poor masses involved, the increase of over a thousand naira is a very huge amount during this hardship days of covid-19 pandemic.
Federal government of Nigeria have been doing great jobs to make sure every Nigerias succeed, it will be very kind of the minister not to proceed with the planned price increase.
