Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL) famously known as Ajaokuta Steel mill is a company in Nigeria, located in Ajaokuta, Kogi State,Nigeria. Set on 24,000ha of land, it is the biggest steel mill in Nigeria, and the coke oven and by products plant are bigger than all the refineries. Ajaokuta Steel mill started by the Soviet Union in 1979 under a cooperation agreement with Nigeria, and the complex reached 98% complection in 1974, but has not produced a single steel till date. The company was Incorporated in 1979 and The Nigeria President in the second republic, Alhaji Shehu Shagari,laid the foundation stone of the complex in 1980.
President Muhammadu Buhari Administration have settled the outstanding issue surrounding the Companies out of Court a few years back. The Federal Government has spent more than $10billion within 34 years and it will still require about extra $2billion to finish the plant. Ajaokuta Steel rolling mill have the capacity to turn a major producer of auto-electrical spare parts, shipbuilding, industrial machineries, railways and carriages.
when Ajaokuta Steel Company begin working in full capacity it can generate about 600,000 jobs in Nigeria(the disclosure was made by the National Chairman, Nigeria Institution of Metallurgical,Mining and Materials (NIMMM) Engr.Dr. Ayodeji Adeyemo.
