For your whole life, you’ve been told that you simply won’t get very far without a university education. Well, I’m here to tell you that it's a bloody lie. Despite the ideas and doctrines we grew up with about schooling, university, and education, here are some specialized reasons why you don’t need a four-year degree to make it in life.
1. The vast majority of employees are hired on the basis of their abilities and skills.
I went to one of the best universities here in Nigeria, and graduated with a degree in Biochemistry, and all I learnt in class didn't make me the successful entrepreneur that I am today. Are you talented? Do you have a portfolio of labor to prove how talented you are? Are you able to meet a deadline? Well, you already have what it takes to be successful because no employee will hire someone who depends on just the grades and can't think outside the box.
2. Many high-paying jobs don't require a degree.
Do you know that most high-paying skills like artificial intelligence, programming, graphics design, and even skills like furniture making and fashion design, to mention a few, are not taught in tertiary schools? People who work with their skills earn far more than those working with their degrees, and they also enjoy a great deal of independence.
3.Business and entrepreneurship are not teachable in the university.
Business and entrepreneurship are not taught in school. You learn them in the real world. It's acceptable to say going to university might inculcate some great traits and train you to be more responsible in the future, but you can't learn all in school. In fact, you use very little of what you learn in school in the real world as an entrepreneur.
4. There are no white-collar jobs anywhere and degrees are becoming more useless too.
A lot of us can attest to the fact that after graduation, we discovered that what we studied in school was not even worth the stress we went through while studying it, because there's practically no place or establishment to work with such a degree. Degrees are becoming useless and, what's worse, what's worse? There's absolutely no white collar or government job anywhere. In this present world, you will find people working and making money doing completely different things, and not with what they learned in university.
5. What's more shocking? Many successful entrepreneurs never talk about their university degrees.
The list is endless... Aliko Dangote, Femi Otedola, Mike Adenuga, Steve Jobs, Mary Kay Ash, Larry Page, and so on, never attributed their huge success to their university degrees. They may attend tertiary schools, but what they study is not what they're living with. Getting a university degree may be great as it helps to reduce the rate of illiteracy, but if you can't afford the high price of a university education, that's not the end. Learn a high-paying, viable skill or develop your talents, build your portfolio, and get to work.
