Colonel Hassan Stan-Labo, a former Army Officer who was a guest on Sunrise Daily on Thursday while reacting to the security summit report stated that government must not give up. The government must exploit every advantage coming out of the economic areas of strength like Agriculture, Mining, Tourism, Sport, etc. Areas where they think mass employment could be generated. He noted that poverty and unemployment are the major factors fueling the insecurity in the northern part of Nigeria.
Col. Hassan gave example using Agriculture as one of the areas where the government can generate employment. He said in Agriculture you don't need to be schooled to be involved in Agriculture. Agriculture itself has about 23 chains. There are certain aspects of Agriculture you don't need a Western Education to be involved in it and the same goes with mining, sport, etc. Government should be able to exploit these areas. They should not be discouraged and when I am saying this, I am speaking to governors of the North because North is in a terrible fix, he said.
In the North, poverty is dealing with us, there is no poverty down the South because I lived in Lagos for quite a while. Everybody is a big man in Lagos. Go up North and see the poverty; that is why you will dash someone 100 Naira in the North, he or she will lie down on the ground rolling, thanking God for you, and tears will come out of your eyes. I seldom visit the village because of this kind of embarrassment, Colonel Hassan stated.
