School Resumption: ASUU Gives Conditions For Reopening Of Schools In Nigeria

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has given the federal government conditions before schools can open back across the country.

The president of the Union, Prof Biodun Ogunremi in an interview with Punch Newspaper that urged the federal government not to open schools in the country except parents sign undertaken.

You will recall that due to COVID-19, schools have been closed and students are asked to stay home pending the time the pandemic subsides.

However, the federal government has been under intense pressure to reopen schools for students to write their WAEC exams since markets and banks are opened despite the spike in COVID-19 in the country.

Speaking on the pressure to reopen schools, ASUU insisted that some certain measures and conditions must be met before school can be reopened.

The ASUU president said "An attempt to send back the children to school at a time there is a spike in COVID-19 cases in Nigeria is like experimenting with the lives of our children.

“If they put all the things in place, including social and physical distancing, sanitisers, kitting the children as we see in other places, decontamination with water flowing in the schools and all the gadgets, why not?

“So, if government can meet all these conditions, then they can reopen the schools. But if they cannot meet all these conditions, they should not experiment with even 10 students in any school.”

He cited instance like Kenya where school resumption has been slated for next year to curtail the rise of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS has given the federal government one week ultimatum to reopen schools in the country. The association also organized a Twitter hashtag #SaveNigerianStudents that trended on the microblogging app on Friday July 17.

What do you think about this? Should the federal government reopen schools in the country or wait till 2021 when the COVID-19 would be been adequately contained?
