On Sunday 19th, July 2020. The president of The Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU) Mr Biodun Ogunniyi, had a telephone interview with the PREMIUM TIMES, where he urged the union (ASUU) not to reopen schools until 2021, amidst the fear for the health of the students during this pandemic.
Due to the outbreak of covid-19 in the country Nigeria, the government on March 19th ordered the shut down of all tertiary secondary schools nationwide and before then the union had commenced on a nationwide strike over the Federal Government’s decision to withhold the salaries of its members who defiled the order of government in enrolling in the integrated personnel and payroll system (IPPIS).
In the interview Mr Biodun Ogunniyi said;
“First, we did not say schools should not be reopened until 2021. We only adviced that schools be reopened anytime it is considered safe for our children”
He went further to say;
”They have brought our guidelines and conditions for school resumption, they must now supervise and ensure that those conditions are met. Beyond formulating policy they must see to its implementation. So, we are saying it is not just a matter of putting things on paper but implementation from primary schools to tertiary institutions”.
Speaking about the facilities and means of ensuring that the student’s safety and ability for them to maintain social distancing in the schools.
Mr Biodun Ogunniyi added that; “If the FG eventually reopened schools it has nothing to do with the universities”.
The obvious reason for that is because they (ASUU) are still on strike, with the Federal Government yet to comply with them or provide for their demands. So till then, even if the Federal Government orders for the resumption of schools lecturers won’t be taking classes until ASUU’s demands are met.
