South west Governor have reached an agreement and have indicated interest for schools resumption.Recall that the federal Government decided to reverse the proposed resumption dates for junior and secondary schools students who were supposed to sit for 2020 West African Examinations.
Although some state Governors and well meaning Nigeria disagreed with FG on the continuous shutdown of schools:describing it as a backward approach to the economy and set the back to the educational sector, but FG remained adamant and insisted that its not yet safe to reopen schools for students.
Regardless of FG stance of not reopening schools:six south west Governors have resolved to reopen schools if FG permits. This was revealed yesterday being 15th July at the end of their virtual meeting organised by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN).
They reiterated that states should approach the federal Government and Waec to extend the resumption date to at least three from form the earlier scheduled resumption date (4th August) rather than postponing it till further notice.
According to them;schools have in place incident managers and class room wardens as means of combating the virus in case the need arises. However, we deserve to ask yourself some pertinent questions regarding reopening of school amid this coronavirus epidemic.
1* Will state Governments provide enough desks to maintain social distancing?
2* Will state Governors employ more teachers to Match teachers pupil ratio in schools.
3* How many teachers are required per school per subject?
4* Would state Governments distribute free certified protective nose masks to pupils and teachers or parents are going to be responsible
5* How will you monitor compliance in each school regarding violation of Social distancing orders.
6*Do you have the capacity to mitigate the massive outbreak of coronavirus if the need arises.
