Following the suspension of the safe reopening of schools by the federal government, States and educational stakeholders has been calling on the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration to allow graduating students especially WASSCE and SS3 students to resume and sit for their examination.
It could be recalled that the Federal government suspended the planned reopening of schools for graduating students in SS3, JS3 and Primary 6 due to the fears of students contracting the dreaded corona virus.
Director of The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria,Seye Oleyele, said the forum had met with the governments of the South Western States and proposes August 3rd for resumption to enable students sits for WASSCE examination.
According to the report by the PUNCH, the director of the forum, Seye Oleyele said "considering the peculiarities of each state , the forum reached a consensus that at least by August 3 , the SSS 3 pupils should resume"
States should approach the Federal Government at the first instance seeking the postponement of the WASSCE by at least three weeks from the proposed resumption . At the second instance , states should directly approach WAEC (the West African Examinations Council ) to seek for an extension of the WASSCE , to week commencing August 24. ”
The forum is beaconing on the federal government to reopen schools for graduating students especially WASSCE to resume and sit for their examination and that the federal government should liaise with the examination body to shift the examination by three weeks.
But the federal government on Wednesday insisted that it is not yet safe for schools resumption.
I opined that the Federal government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari should yield to the demand of educational stakeholders and reopens schools for graduating students especially WASSCE students.
Schools should resume for graduating students especially WASSCE students and all schools should endeavor to adhere strictly to the guidelines on covid19.
