Nigerians have been reacting angrily to the statement credited to the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU), asking the federal government not to reopen schools until 2021.
Recall that ASUU had earlier stated it supported the decision of the Federal Government to stop Senior Secondary School 3 pupils from partaking in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination earlier scheduled to commence on August 4.
The union advised the government to shut down schools until 2021 to ensure adequate preparations, citing the case in some countries such as Kenya.
President of the union, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, made the recommendations today in an interview with Sunday Punch, noting that no reasonable government would take such chances unless parents would be told to sign an undertaking.
He said, “Look, Kenya has said they have closed all their schools till next year; they too have exams to write. Safety first. If it means closing the schools until next year to safeguard the lives of Nigerian children and safeguard the health of all Nigerians, so be it.
Several Nigerians however are not happy with this statement and have since taken to the social media to voice their displeasure.
Take a look at some of the comments below;

@DrUdofa said "ASUU is always BAD NEWS, they are either on strike or threatening to commence. They don't like to work, and gladly for them, they find an excuse in Covid 19. Can ASUU please tell us what will happen in 2021. Are they developing vaccine? Impossible!
@_collinsville said "Wait oo, So if there was no corona, we would still be on ASUU strike. Imagine!!!
@HAHayatu said "Bunch of lazy ASUU , your mates all over the world are seeing ways to find cure for Covid-19 all you did was fighting IPPIS and now you want to continue doing nothing by staying at home with closed schools. Mostly Profs and Docs of plagiarism.
What do you make of this development?
