Following the announcement made by the FG early this month to stop the SSS3 students from partaking in this year West African Senior School Certificate which is to commence on August 4, ASUU has given full support to FG decision saying the reopening of schools should commence next year 2021.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) president, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi said "Safety first. If it means closing the schools until next year to safeguard the lives of Nigerian children and safeguard the health of all Nigerians, so be it."
He added that Nigerians lives are too precious to risk it for school reopening. And further said that the union had not seen any evidence to show that schools were secure to go back.
I in my honest opinion object to their decision to close schools for the rest of this year. If need be then ASUU should not receive salaries from FG until school reopens next year 2021. Then they might have an insight of what Nigerian citizens and students are facing because of their rash decision. And for the record, private schools have secured and appealed to the preventive measures against the spread of the virus which include the wearing of face mask, hand gloves, the use of hand sanitizers or soap and water to wash their hands frequently and also the social distancing rule. All this private schools has set in place.
So why should schools resumption still be postponed to next year? This would affect Nigerian students mentally indeed. But if they would push through with their decision ASUU should not be paid salaries for the rest of the year as well. This is my outspoken opinion.
