COVID-19: Health Experts doubted Madagascar Miracle Cure, they were right (Opinion)

About 14 million cases of COVID-19 has been recorded since the first case of the Virus was recorded in Wuhan China. The Virus which has seen 593,000 deaths around the world. Various efforts have been put in to find a cure to the Pandemic which have put the world on a standstill for months.

Reports of a cure for the Virus from Madagascar came out a couple of months ago. The news of the cure initially brought hope that the Pandemic would be over soon. However, the hope would be short-lived as more information disproved the efficacy of the Madagascar cure.

Madagascar's President, Andry Rajoelina launched the COVID-19 Cure in Antanarivo on April 2020, driving the cure in front of Cameras showing off a new saviour for the world. This quickly hit the headlines amidst quick acceptance from Africans who showed their delight that a cure had come from Africa - a victory for the region. The herbal remedy is" produced from artemisia, a plant with proven efficacy against malaria, and other indigenous herbs, according to the Malagasy Institute of Applied Research, which developed the beverage."

Orders were made for the Miracle Cure by African countries including the Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania. But the publicity of this cure didn't do much to convince the scientific community. The World Health Organisation and several health & medical experts cast doubt over the efficacy of this herbal mixture.

However, inspite of unverifiable evidence, many Pan Africans argued that the only reason the cure's efficacy was because of anti-African innovations. Few months down the line, the hype around Madagascar has disappeared. In fact, Madagascar still has growing cases of the COVID-19. The latest updates have COVID-19 cases at over 6,000 with 53 deaths.
