BEDC Seeks More MAPs For Meter Distribution

Benin Electricity distribution Company has declared that it needed more Meter Assets Providers (MAPs) to cover ground that were lost due to COVID-19 nationwide lockdown in the country.

The company said it has rolled out advertisement for interested parties to join the MAP of BEDC.

The BEDC Public Relations Officer in Ondo state, Mr. Mike Banarbas disclosed this yesterday in a chat with The Reporter in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

Barnabas said having more people on board would enable BEDC fast-track it’s metering programme by reaching more places which the five MAPs won’t be able to access on time.

According to him, MAPs are the same service providers and that the five designated for BEDC have been performing their duties creditably well in terms of meter roll out plans within their individual assigned coverage zone.

While reacting to the high charges by BEDC, compared to other Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs), he noted that every DISCO charges their customers based on individual peculiarities, stressing that there are lots of factors that determines what a DISCOs charge it’s customers which he said is decided by the regulatory body.

The public Relations Officer affirmed that improved power supply was a function of what the nation is generating at any particular time.

“With the current national generation that hovers around 3,000-5,000 megawatts, it is impossible for anyone to expect to have 24 hours supply in his home”.

“As a Disco, BEDC invests continuously to upgrade and strengthen her network to ensure that it can distribute whatever is available at any given time to all her customers,” he said.

It would be recalled that the Nigeria Regulatory Commission (NERC) had approved only five MAPs for BEDC from the 42 MAPs for 11 DISCOs in the country.

The regulatory body had also given the DISCOs a target to close the meter metering gap by December 2021, which the DISCOs said was not realistic.
