The Nigeria Union of Teachers, Lagos State chapter, have rejected the move by South West governors to resume schools in August for WASSCE because of the rising COVID-19 cases, and the limited testing centres available in the state according to PUNCH.
The Lagos State Chairman of the union, Mr Adesina Adedoyin, stated above while reacting to the decision of the South West governors, to reopen schools for SS3 students to participate in WASSCE, saying that it was disheartening that the governors, and the Federal Government could not take a uniform decision.
Recall that the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission, Commissioners, Special Advisers on Education, and SUBEB chairmen, have earlier agreed to reopen schools for SS3 students at their last virtual meeting, contrary to the federal government directives.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers, Lagos State chapter, however, does not support the idea of reopening schools in the state, and chairman of the union, Mr Adesina Adedoyin, said and quote;
'The Federal Government is saying no resumption and the South West governors are saying pupils should resume. There should be a synergy between the federal and state governments. The task force members know the extent of the pandemic and if the curve has not been flattened, they will not advise schools to reopen.
It is people who are alive that can write examinations, and use certificates for further studies. What is paramount now are the children; they are the most vulnerable. You don’t know where they have branched or visited on their way home. If we are not careful, the cases we have might increase'.
He equally stressed that the NUT in the state would not resume, to avoid putting the lives of pupils in danger due to the rising cases of COVID-19 in the state.
In Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Education closed all tertiary, secondary and primary schools nationwide, over the outbreak of the COVID-19 in the country earlier in Match, 2020. The indefinite closure is part of measures to contain the spread of the virus among school children.
But the question remain whether it's right to reopen schools, despite spike in the number of COVID-19 cases allover the country, as the Lagos State teachers pointed out, are they making the right move by supporting FG to suspend WASSCE?,
