On Friday a 32-year-old man identified as Aboh Ogbeche committed suicide at his family home in Lawanson, Lagos State's Surulere district.
Aboh was said to have drunk bleach, even though there was nothing to suggest that he was trying to commit suicide, sources said.
The victim poured the liquid into a cup, sat in front of his mother, gulped the fluid and instantly started to convulse.
The mother, stunned by the incident, raised the alarm and Aboh was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
It was discovered the deceased did not leave a suicide note behind or tell any of his friends about his decision to commit suicide.
A source, speaking on anonymity condition, said,
"Aboh was a very jovial guy and no one suspected he would be able to talk about taking his own life.
"He came from the state of Cross River and was around 32. He collapsed about 3.30pm on Friday in his mum's presence after drinking a bottle of bleach. He was rushed to the Idi Araba Aishat Hospital where he died. His body was deposited in the mortuary at LUTH.
Friends of Aboh who were saddened by the incident expressed their thoughts on Facebook page of the victim.

"Darling, you should have spoken to somebody. How could you have thought for a second this is the most ideal way. It would be ideal if you let one try to talk if he is going through a rough time.
"We are still linked one way or the other, even though we're far apart. So, please, nobody should be threatened by what the other might have done. Such social media; people develop low self-esteem, become discouraged and feel as though they are not adequate.
"But this ought not to be so. Let's try to stay strong, because there's hope when there is life. Ogbeche Tear.
