The Osun District Court in Ile-Ife sentenced 35-year-old Maruf Ojo to a one-month prison sentence on Monday for stealing 55,000 Naira worth of plantains.

Maruf was ordered on one count for stealing by A.A. Adebayo.

The accused allegedly stole N55,000 plaintain from oladipupo on Sunday, contrary to articles 383 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Osun Laws, 2002.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Osanintui, told the court on Sunday that the defendant had committed the crime on July 17 around 1:00 pm in the village of Oke-Ora via Ile-Ife.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

Defense attorney, O. Moeni Tosin, asked the judge to be compassionate about the judiciary and said that the convict was the first time of stealing.

In its court ruling, judge AA Adebayo accepted that the court had considered the fact that the convicted person was a first offender.

However, he said sinners should not go unpunished, adding that the punishment would deter other criminals and convicts.

Adebayo sentenced a man to one month in prison for theft with the option of being fined N1000.
