Wike prevented policemen on legal duty from arresting Joi Nunieh.
The Police Command in Rivers says policemen who went to arrest Dr Joi Nunieh, the former Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), were on legitimate duty.
The command’s spokesman, DSP Nnamdi Omoni made the clarification in a statement on Friday in Port Harcourt.
A media report had suggested that the presence of the policemen at the residence of Nunieh was not on the directive of the command.
Omoni said the police operatives were from the Inspector General of Police (I-G) Monitoring Team, with support of the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Joseph Mukan.
“The Rivers police command wish to clarify that officers who went to the residence of Nunieh were from the I-G Monitoring Team in Abuja on official assignment to the state.
“The officers, before proceeding to Nunieh’s residence, observed due protocols and requisite standard operating procedures.
“On arrival, the officers reported to the police command headquarters with their investigation activities duly signed and approved by the commissioner.”
Omoni said that mobile policemen that accompanied the team to effect the arrest of Nunieh, went there on official duty, contrary to some media reports.
“The reference that police officers went to arrest Nunieh without the directive of the CP and I-G is ridiculous and most unfortunate, hence should be disregarded.
“Mukan is poised to deliver quality policing services and the command will continue to remain firm, focused and will not be distracted by any consideration,” he said.
Suspected armed robbery kingpin arrested in Ogun with weapons, charms.
One Oluwatosin Abowaba has been arrested for allegedly being the leader of a group responsible for stealing of motorbikes in Mowe and Ijebu axis of Ogun State.
Abowaba was arrested by the Ogun State security agency, the So-Safe Corps.
In a statement on Friday, the Spokesperson of the So-Safe Corps, ACC Moruf Yusuf said the State Commander of the Corps, Soji Ganzallo, had few weeks back “ordered the Redeemed Division of the corps to ensure that this notorious robber be apprehended and transfered to the nearby jurisdiction of Nigeria police immediately.”
According to Yusuf, the suspect is alleged to have involved in different cases of stolen motorcycles in both Mowe and Ijebu axis.
Abowaba, Yusuf said, had been mentioned by a gang of “apprehended criminals,” in police custody.
He said the gang claimed that he (Abowaba) used to receive any stolen motorbike, while assisting in selling same to interested buyers.
“The gang further confessed that the suspect, Abowaba is the kingpin that used to successfully take every motorbike stolen in Mowe for Ijebu-Ode for sale,” Yusuf informed.
He said, “The So-Safe Corps, Redeemed Division, with proper intelligence gathering techniques, successfully got the crime suspect Oluwatosin Abowaba (a.k.a Maja), who has been declared wanted for one crime or the other by the Ijebu-Ode and Mowe Divisional Police Headquarters, arrested at Olowotedo, Mowe at about 06:00hrs on Wednesday, July 15, 2020.”
Items recovered from him are “cutlass, cleaver knife, iron rods, a crow bar and different charms he may be using to support the weapons.”
It was gathered that the suspect has been transferred to Mowe Police Divisional Headquarters for further investigation and likely prosecution.
Former NDDC MD, Nunieh testifies before Reps, makes revelation on Akpabio.
The former acting Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission, Joy Nunieh, on Friday, testified before the House of Representatives Committee on NDDC at the ongoing investigative hearing on the alleged mismanagement of funds by the commission.
Nunieh, who joined the hearing and gave her testimony via Zoom, defended herself against allegations of corruption, arguing that there was no contractor that paid bribes.
This newspaper report that Nunieh was expected to appear before the committee on Thursday before police operatives laid siege at her residence in Port Harcourt.
The former NDDC boss was, however, rescued by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and taken to the Government House.
The former NDDC managing director had accused Akpabio of fraud, embezzlement, and sexual harassment.
“Nobody makes any payment in NDDC without Godswill Akpabio…. When we first came to the NDDC, on the day of going for the inauguration, he told me in the car that ‘Madam MD, If you don’t do what I say, the same pen which I use to sign your letter, it will be the same pen I will use to remove you,” she had said after appearing before a Senate panel.
“He said the first thing I should do when I get to Port-Harcourt is to change the dollars in the NDDC account. I was scared to do that.”
But Akpabio and vowed to sue the former NDDC boss and denied knowledge of what was going on in the commission under Nunieh because he could not reach her.
Ogun discharges 12 COVID-19 patients, confirms 14 new cases.
The Ogun State Government said it has discharged 12 COVID-19 patients from its isolation centre.
This, Newspot learnt, was after the patients tested negative for the novel coronavirus.
In a statement on Friday, the state government also confirmed 14 new cases of the virus.
As of Friday morning, the state has a total of 1,146 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 777 of which have recovered, it was gathered.
Ogun State government informed the number of fatalities remains 22, adding that 347 active cases are still being managed.
“Ogun State as at 16th July, 2020, had a total of 347 active COVID-19 cases it was managing, as it recorded 14 new cases.
“The new cases bring to 1146, the total number of cases so far confirmed in the State, even as 12 cases were discharged, having recovered from the virus. The number of all cases discharged in total now stands at 777.
“Altogether, the related deaths recorded remain at 22, as health authorities advise the public to adhere to recommended preventive measures,” the state said this on its social media platforms.
Alleged N10b Fraud: Rice farmers association suspends anchor borrower scheme in Kano.
Rice farmers association of Nigeria (RIFAN) has announced the suspension of the state’s rice anchor borrowers’ programme which is a federal government agricultural intervention anchored by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Announcing the suspension of the programme in the state, the state chairman of RIFAN, Alhaji Abubakar Haruna Aliyu revealed that, the association had to take the decision to allow for an investigation into the allegation made against the association by the state public complaint and ant-corruption commission.
“The association hereby regret to announce the suspension of rice anchor borrower scheme in Kano state until further notice as directed by the RIFAN national body based on the allegation labelled against the Kano chapter of the association. We are aware that suspension of the scheme at this critical point is not the best option, but we are left with no option than to take this step as directed,” said the chairman.
He added that those that have already made their 20% equity deposit with their banks can come forward for the redemption of their inputs as stipulated.
According to him, the association will ensure that all that made the deposit have been attended to for fairness and justice.
It could be recalled that some few weeks ago, the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission arrested some executive members of RIFAN Kano chapter over an alleged fraud of N10 billion rice anchor borrower fund meant for rice farmers in the state.
