Emmanuel Nwonu Jailed For Stealing Church Offering in Ebonyi

The child of an outwardly debilitated man, Emmanuel Nwonu, was on Thursday, condemned to a year's detainment without a choice of fine by an Ebonyi State Officers' Court sitting in Abakaliki for taking church offering.

The convict, had penultimate Wednesday, taken an undisclosed measure of cash what's more, a telephone from a lady in the Udunukwe region of Abakaliki, the state capital.

Punch reporter accumulated that he was captured by men of the Nigeria Police on Monday and the aggregate of N41,465 was found on him.

Nwonu had told the police that he jumped into the St. Patrick Catholic Church, Kpirikpiri, in the Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state, on July 11, 2020, broke the contribution box and took the entirety of N41,465.

He was summoned on two checks of theft and taking on Thursday.

The charges read, "That you, Emmanuel Nwonu, July 11, 2020, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Kpirikpiri, Abakaliki, in the Abakaliki Magisterial District, entered a structure utilized for strict love and took the whole of N45,465 having a place with St. Patrick Catholic Church, in this way submitting an offense culpable under Section 415 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

"That you, Emmanuel Nwonu, on a similar date and place and in the equivalent previously mentioned authoritative locale, did wilfully and unlawfully harmed one contribution box and it's latch esteemed at N15,000, property of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Kpirikpiri, Abakaliki, in this manner submitting an offense culpable under Section 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009."

The police investigator, Sergeant Alumona Sebastine, offered the taken money, the harmed latch and a telephone as proof against the convict.

Nwonu, who conceded, said his helpless condition drove him into wrongdoing, including that life had not been significant to him since he lost his employment as a driver.

"I am truly enduring dealing with my outwardly debilitated dad; it has not been that simple for me. At present, I have no spot of my own to remain. I rest under the Spera-In- Deo flyover consistently. I am a driver and I lost my employment, and from that point forward, I have not secured some other position to do," he said.

Judge A. C. Nwusulor said the offenses would have earned the convict seven a long time's detainment, yet chose to confine the sentence to a year so that the Nwonu c ould think and atone.

Punch Metro discovered this was the third time the suspect would be captured for thievery and taking as he was secured twice in 2017.
