Ebonyi state Magistrates' Court sitting in Abakaliki on Thursday, gave an a year's prison sentence without a choice of fine to one Emmanuel Nwonu, said to be the child of an visually hindered man.
The convict was blamed for taking N45,465 having a place with St. Patrick Catholic Church in Kpirikpiri, Abakaliki. The aggregate of N41,465 was recouped from Nwonu who was likewise blamed for taking an undisclosed measure of cash and a telephone from a lady in the Udunukwe region of Abakaliki.
The charges against the convict who was summoned on thievery on Thursday, read;
"That you, Emmanuel Nwonu, July 11, 2020, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Kpirikpiri, Abakaliki, in the Abakaliki Magisterial District, entered a structure utilized for religious worship and took the whole of N45,465 belonging to St. Patrick Catholic Church, in this manner carrying out an offense punishable under Section 415 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.
"That you, Emmanuel Nwonu, on a similar date and place and in the equivalent previously mentioned magisterial area, did wilfully and unlawfully harmed one contribution box and it's latch esteemed at N15,000, property of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Kpirikpiri, Abakaliki, in this manner carrying out an offense punishable under Section 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009."
Nwonu conceded to charges and furthermore accused his activities for his helpless condition.
He stated, "I am truly enduring dealing with my visually debilitated dad; it has not been that easy for me. As of now, I have no spot of my own to stay. I sleep under the Spera-In-Deo flyover consistently. I am a driver and I lost my employment, and from that point forward, I have not secured some other job to do."
Magistrate A. C. Nwusulor who managed the case, said he chose sentence Nwonu to a year detainment rather than 7 years so he can think and repent. It was additionally accumulated that preceding his ongoing condemning, the convict was secured twice for stealing in 2017.
