Still on the issue of the SARS campaign, today, Channel Television hosted a program titled Sunrise, it’s a program that always aired on the national TV every day of the week. Today program was graced by Sanusi Turay, a security consultant, and a former Police officer, and also Segun Awosanya, who is a Legal practitioner, a human rights activist, and a social media influencer who’s also known as Sega Link on his social media platforms. The two guests were invited for the interview to speak on the issue of the ongoing protest to eradicate or abolish the Special Anti-robbery squad in the police system.
Speaking on the issue, Segun Awosanya says that the Federal government should look into the matter urgently before it gets out of hand and that they are not asking them to cancel the department because they are very important to society, rather they should re-brand them, they shouldn’t be seen every time on the streets because they are called “special” meaning they can only come out when it’s a matter of urgency, apart from this they should also be sensitized on how to relate with the public.
While Sanusi Turey made it known that restructuring is the most paramount thing in the system because he feels the system is bad already and that they need urgent attention. Speaking on the new 10,000 police officers recruited, he says that those 10,000 should be taken to a different sector, rather than mixing them with the old ones that are already corrupted. He gave an example of how a former DPO how was also a former athlete for Nigeria, went to a police station and found a man that has been in detention while he was still working yet to be released, he asked them to release him immediately. He also feels inadequate funding is the major reason why Police officers engage in criminal activities, he says that in the United Kingdom the government there spends over 3 billion pounds on police and other forces budget, and that’s about 1/3 of Nigeria total national budgets. He feels that a Constable should earn nothing less than 400,000 Naira monthly in Nigeria because they are the ones doing more jobs.
He applauds the federal government on raising the salary structure of the teachers, he feels he should also do so for the Force because the three important sectors in Nigeria are security, Education, and Health sectors and they must be adequately funded.
