On Tuesday, July 14, 2020, Nigeria was thrown into mourning after the Nigerian Air Force disclosed that the country's first Female combat helicopter pilot, Flying officer Arotile Tolulope was dead.

24-year-old Tolulope, only decorated less than a year ago was very instrumental in the fight against banditry in North-central states of the country leading various air raids on the criminal elements.

She was said to have been knocked down by an excited old colleague who was reversing his car to greet her which led to severe head injuries and pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

A public outcry has since gone out to the Nigerian Air Force to investigate thoroughly the circumstances surrounding the death of the Kogi-state-born gallant officer as many struggled to accept this explanation about her death.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force through its Director of Public Relations and information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, has disclosed that investigation about her death has already began adding that two suspects were already in custody.

However, the Nigeria Air Force is yet to reveal the identity of the "excited" old colleague who unfortunately knocked her down while reversing the car. A decision which has not gone well with many who felt that the identity of the suspect should be made public.

From what could be gathered, the old colleague is a man, also he and the deceased both attended the same school back then.

However, in my opinion, there could be reasons why the force has decided not to release the identity of the suspect yet. What could be the reasons?

1. The suspect is still a suspect for now. Any suspect that is yet to be confirmed guilty of his/her crime can still be considered innocent of the crime unless proven so by the court of law. I.e for now, the alleged Tolulope's killer identity could remain hidden until evidences found him guilty in the court of law.

2. Safety of the suspect is paramount. The Nigerian Air Force is a professional body with over 50 years experience. It's safe to say they know what they are doing by not revealing the identity of the alleged killer yet.

Considering the outcry and reactions that trailed the death of the female pilot, it is safe to say, keeping the suspect's identity hidden was the best thing to do. It might have prevented harm from coming to the suspect while still in detention or worse still the family of the suspect. If the identity was not hidden, maybe the suspect or his family could have been receiving death threats by now.

3. Revealing the identity of the killer might interfere with ongoing investigations about the death of the young pilot. The Nigerian Air Force surely knows best in this regard.

What do you think? Should the Nigerian Air Force had revealed the identity of the suspect or not? Let us know through your comments below.
