The Kano State House of Assembly on Wednesday started the process of further amending the State's amendment to the Penal Code (No.12), the 2014 law, to make castration a legal punishment for rape offenders.
Following a motion tabled on Wednesday by a member, Nuraddeen Al-hassan, the Assembly made the resolution seeking reform of the law.
At the Plenary chaired by the Speaker, Abdulazeez Gafasa, the majority of the members of the Assembly were unanimous in the decision.
Kano Chamber Although calling for the law review to better represent a tougher state penalty for criminals, Al-hassan emphasized that the existing 14-year prison sentence penalty for offenders was not adequate.
"I believe this is the only step to be taken to bring an end to the rampant rape cases in our country, because it is so alarming.
"I do want to call on the House to look at the security issues and strengthen their efforts to tackle the state's rape cases," he said.
