Good Morning Nigerians here are the news headlines for this morning Thursday July 16, 2020.

1. President Buhari Reacts As Magu Is Released After Ten Days In Detention

The president of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has said the invitation of the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, by the Justice Ayo Salami-led Presidential panel was in his best interest.

Adesina stated this while speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme on Wednesday. According to him, Magu was only invited to tell his side of the story.

On whether Magu’s 10-day detention was illegal, Adesina said: “if anything illegal has been done, there are ways to seek redress for it. However, I think it is in the best interest of everybody, including Magu, for the panel to have invited him to hear his side of the story.

“I can tell you on authority that before this became a public issue, the panel had been sitting for weeks. When the panel established some grounds for Mr. Magu to be invited, President Buhari then gave approval for him to be invited and he was invited and he came.” Adesina also noted that Magu, who was released on bail on Wednesday, was told to step aside to allow for a proper investigation.

2. Federal Governments Gives Latest Updates On Re-opening Of Schools, WASSCE

The Federal Government has revealed that it was not yet safe for academic activities to resume in schools across the country Nigeria. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba the Minister of state for education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said this while addressing journalists at the end of the eighth virtual federal executive council meeting, on Wednesday. Nwajiuba also disclosed that WAEC is negotiating with other West African countries to look at possible shifts in date for the 2020 WASSCE.

The FG had ordered the closure of schools since March to curtail the spread of coronavirus.

Despite demand by the House of Representatives for the reopening of schools to allow students to write the 2020 West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Nwajiuba said academic institutions would remain closed till adequate safety is assured.

3. Maku's Kidnapped Son Found Dead Near Home

Salisu Maku, the kidnapped son of Mr. Usman Maku, who was kidnapped in Gudi, was found dead yesterday amid the funeral of his sister, Sahadatu, who was shot dead by kidnappers on Tuesday. With Salisu’s wife still in captivity, the bandits demanded N20 million.

Gunmen suspected to be Fulani had invaded the home of the elder brother to Labaran Maku in Gudi, the hometown of Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, and killed his daughter. They also abducted his eldest son, Salisu, and the wife, Asamawu.

A resident of Gudi, Mr. Kaura Danladi, told The Guardian that over 10 gunmen invaded the town at about 8p.m. on Tuesday, shooting sporadically and headed for Maku’s residence, some 200 metres away from the governor’s.

Danladi said that Maku’s daughter, who graduated from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, was shot through the window by the bandits. She died while being rushed to the hospital by family members.

After the daughter was buried at the family compound, there was pandemonium yesterday when news came that the lifeless body of Salisu had been found few metres away from the house. According to Jonah Yakubu, the kidnappers are demanding N20 million before the release of Salisu’s wife.

Meanwhile, Governor Sule has convened a state-wide security meeting at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Lafia. In his opening speech, the governor emphasised his administration’s determination to ensure peace and security of lives and property in the state.

Sule, however, told Fulani chiefs to tame the criminal activities of their own in the state, warning that his administration would not tolerate any form of criminality by any group or persons.

Urging traditional and religious leaders to uphold ethnic and religious tolerance in the interest of peace in the state, he appealed to participants at the meeting chaired by the Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage, to come up with workable solutions to insecurity in the state. Last week, over 30 passengers were kidnapped by gunmen along Mararaba Udege/Loko highway and nothing has been heard about them since then.
