The Support Team of Twitter says some accounts belonging to prominent individuals including the U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden, reality TV star Kim Kardashian, former U.S. President Barack Obama, and billionaire Elon Musk have been hacked.
In a message posted on Thursday morning, the Team said that the hackers gained access to the Twitter internal system by hacking some of its employees who have access to the system.
“We detected what we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools,” Twitter Support said.
Twitter said that it took steps to prevent the hackers from doing more damage by temporarily restricting tweet functions from top verified accounts after the hackers used the hacked accounts to solicit for bitcoins.
“Once we became aware of the incident, we immediately locked down the affected accounts and removed Tweets posted by the attackers,” it stated.
“We also limited functionality for a much larger group of accounts, like all verified accounts (even those with no evidence of being compromised), while we continue to fully investigate this.
“This was disruptive, but it was an important step to reduce risk. Most functionality has been restored but we may take further actions and will update you if we do.”
