While most married men are busy whining about living and enduring with just one wife, there is a man that has at about 100 wives and almost 200 children.
Mohammed Bello Abubarkar hails from Bida, Niger State. He was a teacher and an Imam, he is believed to be 96 years old.
Local Islamic authorities in Nigeria have been in conflict with him over the legal status of his plethora of marriages, who describe his atypical household as cult-like and out of step with Islamic law.
While polygamous unions are not recognised under civil law in Nigeria, the 12 states governed by Sharia law do recognise polygamous unions as equivalent to monogamous marriage.
Mohammed lured a good number of his harem through his healing powers. Many of which he claimed he cured from various ailments and their retribution was to marry him in return.
In an interview with Al jazeera on June 2012, Mohammed Bello Abubakar said he will continue to marry more wives:
"My large number of wives? I only have 97 wives,” he said. “I am still going to marry more. I will keep marrying them for as long I am alive.
“Left to me, I would have married maybe two wives, but what I am doing is divine.”
This is divination indeed.
