“I’ve repeatedly said that I’m not going to resign as State Treasurer. After many hours of thought and meditation I’ve made a decision that should not be an example to anyone because it is unique to my situation. Last May I told you that after the trial, I would give you the story of the decade. To those of you who are shallow, the events of this morning will be that story. But to those of you with depth and concern the real story will be what I hope and pray results from this morning–in the coming months and years[,] the development of a true Justice System here in the United States.
I am going to die in office in an effort to ‘…see if the shame[-ful] facts, spread out in all their shame, will not burn through our civic shamelessness and set fire to American pride.’ Please tell my story on every radio and television station and in every newspaper and magazine in the U.S.. Please leave immediately if you have a weak stomach or mind since I don’t want to cause physical or mental distress. Joanne, Rob, DeeDee [sic] – I love you! Thank you for making my life so happy. Goodbye to you all on the count of 3. Please make sure that the sacrifice of my life is not in vain.”
Those were the last words of R. Budd Dwyer, an American who killed himself during a press conference to protest his innocence after he had been accused of corruption. The tragic incident which occurred on the 22nd of January, 1987 was caught on tape and still exists on the internet till date.
Journalist invited by Mr Dwyer to witness a speech in defense of his honor were instead witness to one of the most bizarre incidents in history when almost 30 minutes into a speech where the 47 year-old married father of two defended himself as an innocent victim of a corrupt system, Dwyer opened an envelope from in his briefcase which revealed a .357 Magnum revolver. No one knew what he planned to do with the gun, imploring him to put the gun down. Following several tense moments, he put the barrel in his mouth and pulled the trigger. The bullet exiting from the back of his skull had killed him instantly.
Dwyer’s death by suicide was broadcast on noon newscasts around the state and beyond. Many children saw it take place as they were home from school with a snow day. The news media as a whole had no protocol in place to deal with such a shocking turn of events, but those who showed the complete and disturbing footage — which ended with the politician slumped on the floor with blood and brain matter splattered on the wall behind him and blood pouring from his nose and mouth.
To preserve the sanctity of this platform, I have refrained from uploading the disturbing video to this platform but you can find it and a more elaborate version of the story on the web. Click here to read about it on wikipedia.
Unfortunately for Mr Dwyer, the court still found him guilty and upheld their sentence despite his actions. this brings into question the issue of family and personal honor; how people go as far as killing themselves for the sake of honor (see Japanese Hakari) while ome others retire from their job over the slightest accusations.
Personally, i feel that no matter the case, one should have no qualms about losing or failing as you can always get back up but not everyone thinks that way. Share your opinions with me via comments. Lets get talking.
