Nigeria's problems are caused by fake news and social media. - Nuhu Ribadu, former EFCC boss

Nuhu Ribadu, the former Chairman of the EFCC, has blamed social media for the majority of the country's problems.

"Today, social media is partly accountable for what is happening in our country by attempting to propagate things that are not factual and causing division based on religion and ethnicity, among other things," Mr Ribadu said during a news conference in Abuja on Sunday.

Mr Ribadu convened the meeting to dispel social media rumors that he had accused some high government officials of supporting banditry in the country. He urged the government and social media corporations to devise ways to stop fake news from spreading.

"They are not treating us fairly, and I believe the government has a duty and responsibility to act; no one else can." Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all have a role to play, and I don't understand why they would allow such a harmful statement to be made against someone without intervening.

Mr Ribadu went on to say that bogus news on social media poses a serious threat to any country's survival. Despite his great belief in freedom of expression, he stated that such freedom should not be provided "if it is going to cause h*rm to others."
