The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) established by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, the NIMC has the mandate to establish, own, operate, maintain and manage the National Identity Database in Nigeria, register persons covered by the Act, assign a Unique National Identification Number (NIN) and issue a token General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC) to those who are citizens of Nigeria as well as others legally residing within the country. It is no longer news that the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) have mandated all telecommunications operators to terminate any sim card that is not registered with National identify number.
The essence of the registration is to curb high rate of insecurity in the country.
The National Identity Management Commission has has informed Nigerians that has already registered for their National ID card, that they can retrieve their NIN number with a code, by dialing *346# on their phone that has the phone number that was used for the NIN registration.
This information was released after Nigerian Communications Commission [NCC] gave two weeks deadline for mobile network subscribers to provide valid National Identification Number (NIN) to update SIM registration records else they will loose their phone number.
This bill was passed by Muhammadu Buhari to help curb fraudulent activities in Nigeria.
How To Protect Your Phone Number On All Networks:
In other to protect your phone number, here are codes to dial on you phone to link your NIN yo your phone number.
Note: If you have more than one phone number, make sure you link all the phone numbers with your NIN, else you will loose your phone number.

For MTN: Dial *785*NIN#
For Airtel: Dial *121*1# and follow the prompt instructions
For 9mobile: In progress or kindly visit their experience centers
For Glo: Send UpdateNIN, NIN, First Name, Last Name to 109.
