Ramadan: CBN told to release more new naira

notesThe Chief Imam of Nurul Yaqeen Jumma’at Mosque Life Camp, Abuja, Sheikh Yahya Al-Yolawi, on Friday called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to release more redesigned naira notes as the months of Ramadan is fast approaching.

Al-Yolawi made the plea while delivering his Jumma’at sermon, titled, “The Significance of Ramadan Fast: Health, Spiritual, Social and Psychological Benefits of Ramadan Fast,” in Abuja.

He noted that Muslims spend more money during Ramadan on charitable activities and food items.

UK economy recovers after swerving recession

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed on Friday that Britain’s economy rebounded in January after it narrowly evaded recession in the fourth quarter despite rising inflation.

In a statement by the ONS, Gross domestic product grew 0.3 per cent as the services sector offset poor performance by construction and manufacturing, the Business Recorder said.

GDP had dropped 0.5 per cent in December amid widespread strikes as many workers protested over pay that has failed to keep pace with runaway inflation.

Naira plummets against Dollars again

An exchange rate of N462.44 to the dollar was the highest rate recorded within the day’s trading before it settled at N461.50.

The Naira sold for as low as N446 to the dollar within the day’s trading.

A total of US$ 82.56 million was traded at the official Investors’ and Exporters’ window.

The Naira on Friday lost to the dollar as it exchanged at N461.50 at the Investors’ and Exporters’ window.

The rate represented a decrease of 0.11 per cent, compared to the N461 for which it exchanged to the dollar on Thursday.

The open indicative rate closed at N461.50 to the dollar on Friday.
