Flood

Factors to be considered in selecting a site for Aquaculture (fish farming).

The following are some of the factors to be considered in selecting a site for fish farming.

1. AVAILABILITY OF WATER

This is the most important factor to be considered in site selection. This is because, the animals in question, spend their entire life in water.

The sources of water could be an irrigation canal, spring, river, creek, reservoir, rainfall, and deep wells.

2. WATER QUALITY

Emphasis should be placed on dissolved oxygen (D.O), colour, odour, turbidity, transparency, Acidity, Alkalinity, Salinity (salt content), quality, and quantity of both Zooplanktons and Phytoplankton.

3. SOIL TYPE/TEXTURE

In the case of earthen ponds, soil type is also very important. The desired soil type for the earthen pond is ‘Clay Soil’. A concrete pond does not necessarily need soil type consideration.

4. TOPOGRAPHY OF THE LAND

The general conformation of the land should be with slopes not steeper than 2 or 3 percent.

5. The flood records of the area should also be considered.

6. Availability of equipment, services, and supplies needed for the project.

7. Availability of both organic and inorganic manures, drugs, and chemical materials.

8. Availability of feeds.

9. Nearness to all-weather road connections, markets, and hospitals.

10. Availability of skilled and semi-skilled labourers.
