6 Short Term Foods to Plant in This New Planting Season

Agriculture is the act of rearing animals and cultivation of crops for the benefit of man.

Agriculture provides food for man. Foods like vegetables, fruits, roots, tubers, legumes, cereals, wheats, eggs, milk etc, are possible through agriculture. Agriculture also provides shelter, clothing and a source of income for man. In Nigeria, the rural area serve as the main centre of agricultural production.

We are about to enter a new planting season. A lot of people just plant whatever they see. Some plant casava stems, some plant yams, some plant water yams and a host of other crops. Some people just plant without considering certain factors like what to plant, and which crop can be planted and harvested in a short period of time. There are certain crops you can plant and harvest within a short period of time and make money. Crops have seasons. Crops also have periods that they can be harvested. Some crops are two months, some three months, some six months and some are 1 year before it can be harvested.

Prices of foods are still very high in the market today, many people have ventured into agriculture and are making it. Some plant for household use, while some plant for commercial use.

In this article, we will be looking at some vegetables to plant and harvest within a very short period of time. You can maximize your piece of land by engaging in mixed farming or concentrate on mono farming.

1. Cucumber: Cucumber is an edible food consumed by many people. People eat cucumber often. Some prefer it in their salad, while some consume it with groundnut. Cucumber would be mature for harvest within 2-3 months. Its a good crop to plant and expect harvest within a short period of time. Cucumber have a ready market. It doesn't take time to sell. You can take it to the market, or to those who sell vegetables or fruits.

2. Red Pepper: everyone consume pepper either a small amount in their foods or large quantities. Red pepper add color and tastes to food. Every kitchen has pepper. Fresh pepper sells very fast. Fresh pepper takes 2-4 months to grow and mature. The cost of red pepper is very low. So its not capital intensive. It is the seed that is to be planted. Alternatively, you can locate a red pepper seller and demand for rotten ones.

3.Okra: okra is some people's best soup. Okra is a very simple food to prepare. Okra have different types. The dwarf okra produces faster than the very tall native Okra. The dwarf Okra takes at least two months to produce. Its easy to sell it off too. The cost for planting is minimal.

4. Melon: melon (Egusi), is also good for planting. The period for planting and harvesting is short too. Melon takes 3- 5 months to mature. You can sell it off and make money.

5. Garden egg: garden egg is another food that is consumed mostly by people. The leaves can be used for soup. The fruit is consumed too as vegetable. Garden egg plant takes 5- 7 months before it can be harvested.

6. Corn: this new planting season starting from November, people will begin to farm. Corn is one food that we cannot do without. People boil the corn to sell, some roast the fresh corn to sell. Some allow their corn to dry before they sell. Corn is very lucrative. It takes 3 months to mature. You can plant red corn or white corn.

Man cannot do without food. Food nourishes the body system and keeps us healthy. Agricultural products will always thrive and sell because it is what everybody consumes on a daily basis.
