WAEC AND NECO Postponed Indefinitely-FG

This year’s West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination and the National Examinations Council have been postponed indefinitely by The Federal Government due to the current coronavirus pandemic in the country.

The postponement was announced at the daily Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 meeting in Abuja on Tuesday by The Minister of State for Education- Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba.

Both examinations were previously scheduled for May and June 2020.

According to the minister ,15 states had already started electronic learning for pupils on their local television and radio channels following the stay-at-home orders of the federal and several state governments. While also appealing to parents about cooperating with the government to ensure that their children were made available to learn at the selected hours and channels as the government is looking ways for schools to reopen.

The minister said, nobody can reopen schools until all efforts have been coordinated by the government. The Federal Government had already ordered schools to be vacated in late March 2020 as soon as this pandemic broke out.

He added in his address- provisions have been made available online. The Directorate of Information and Communication Technology in conjunction with the Universal Basic Education Commission, the coordinating agency, will anchor an alliance with State Universal Basic Education Boards in all the states so that they can key into the design.

Among the 15 states are Anambra, Lagos, Kaduna, Ondo, Edo, and Ogun. He said there are different education programmes for different times and these states have already commenced learning via different channels that are available in their states, mostly local TV and radio. All the programmes they are running are approved by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Commission

The minister ended his address by saying the biggest challenge of the government is how to reach pupils who are living in rural communities without devices to learn.
