According to information obtained from the National Universities Commission (NUC), sixteen of the fifty four approved state universities in Nigeria are named after different individuals. It is however worthy of note that three of these universities are named after persons that are still alive. Join me to explore these ivory towers.
Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL) is the first university on my list. This institution was named after the first military president of Nigeria who is still alive. Babangida was the head of state of Nigeria for eight years from 1985 to 1993. According to the website of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), this university was founded in 2005 during the administration of Governor Abdulkadir Kure in Niger State. The institution currently has thirty four NUC approved courses.
Sule Lamido University (SLU) is the second institution in this category. This institution which is the flagship university of Jigawa State is located in Kafin Hausa. According to the school’s website, it was founded as Jigawa State University in 2013 by an act of the state House of Assembly. However, in 2014, the House of Assembly passed another law that renamed the institution after Sule Lamido who was the governor of the state at the time. SLU currently has fifteen fully accredited undergraduate programs across three faculties.
The third institution in this category is David Nweze Umahi University of Medical Sciences, Uburu in Ebonyi State. This school is named after the current governor of the state, David Umahi. Interestingly, the school is located in the governor’s community. This university happens to be the second university owned by the state and the third medical university in Nigeria. Umahi is currently serving his second term as governor of the state. Presently, the institution has seventeen undergraduate programs.
What do you think about these institutions?
