Check Out The Best Northern Universities In The Latest Scientific Index Ranking

Only sixteen universities from Northern Nigeria are among the top fifty institutions that made the 2021 edition of Scientific Index ranking of higher institutions.

The best among them is Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. ABU is also the oldest degree awarding institution in the region. University of Ilorin which is ranked ninth in Nigeria is the second best Northern University. The next two universities are Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and Skyline University of Nigeria (SUN), Kano which are both from the North West like ABU.

Here is the complete list of Northern institutions that made the top fifty universities in Nigeria.

1.  Ahmadu Bello University (5)*

2.  University of Ilorin (9)

3.  Usmanu Danfodiyo University (15)

4.  African University of Science and Technology (18)

5.  Skyline University Nigeria (19)

6.  Federal University of Technology, Minna (22)

7.  Bayero University, Kano (25)

8.  University of Maiduguri (31)

9.  Federal University, Wukari (33)

10. Nasarawa State University, Keffi (33)

11. Federal University, Dutse (36)

12. Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil (39)

13. Gombe State University(41)

14. Landmark University (46)

15. University of Abuja (47)

16. University of Jos (48)

The first fact that is obvious from the list is that most of the universities (ten) belong to the federal government. Only six of them are shared equally between private organizations and state governments. Nasarawa State university which is the best state university in Northern Nigeria is placed 10th on the list and 33rd overall whereas the best private institution in the North occupies the 18th position in Nigeria.

Considering locations, Kano State alone hosts three of the universities: Skyline University Nigeria, Bayero University and Kano University of Science and Technology. They are respectively placed 5th, 7th and 12th on the list. Two of the Universities (University of Abuja and African University of Science and Technology are located in Abuja).

An interesting take from the list is that the North Central zone has a share of seven of the top Northern universities. The North West has six while the North East has only three universities in the list. The insecurity in the North East must have affected the the ability of university academics in the zone to carry out scientific research and this is seriously affecting the international outlook of higher institutions of learning in that part of Nigeria.
