2021 UTME: JAMB, COVID-19 and Change of Institution/Course

Many candidates usually choose competitive institutions while apply for Unified Tertiary Institutions Matriculation Examination (UTME). The case was the same this year too. As a result of low scores in the main examinations, several candidates need to change their first choice institution or course. This year (2021) the UTME data correction (as JAMB calls it) cannot be readily done by the candidates. Candidates need to visit Computer Based Test (CBT) centres to effect such change.

There are two reasons for this. The first reason is that only the CBT centres can log in to the profile of 2021 UTME candidates using JAMB registration number or profile code. The second reason is that candidates must confirm any change on their profiles with their finger print. So they need to appear at the centre in person. To be fair to the examination board, JAMB is trying to prevent fraudsters from scamming the candidates but the current situations of Nigeria (and the world) should make the board change this policy.

The Delta variant of COVID-19 which is deadlier and more virulent than other variants of the disease is already in Nigeria. Requiring candidates to gather at CBT centres for change of course/institution may encourage the spread of the disease. The rate of kidnappings and violent crimes is currently high. It is therefore not advisable to endanger the lives of our children unnecessarily. In many states, candidates need to travel for several hours before getting to the nearest CBT centres. This increases the odds of the candidates being involved in road accidents.

It is therefore important that JAMB reconfigure that data correction process so that candidates can carry it out from the comforts of their homes or parents’ offices. In order to prevent scammers from hijacking the process the board should restore the use of One Time Password. The OTP sent to each candidate’s registered phone number should be used to authenticate any change.
