OBJ scores hat-trick in college old boys football tie

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday led the football team of Baptist Boys High School (BBHS), Abeokuta in a football novelty match play held as part of activities to mark the 100th year of the college.

Mr Obasanjo, who is a former student of the school, was the star attraction for spectators, many of whom are also former students of the school.

In the novelty match which pitted old students of the college against former teachers of the school, the former president scored a hattrick to end it 3-0 in favour of his side.

Notable old students in the game include Bukola Olopade, a former Sports Commissioner in Ogun State; and Hakeem Akintunde, who is the Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in the state.

Fire Razes School Building Under Renovation In Osun

A building under renovation at the Adventist Grammar School, Ede, Osun State, by the Old Students Association, was completely razed by fire on Wednesday. 

The cause of the fire was unknown. 

Public spirited individuals helped in putting the raging fire under control as calls to the Osun State Fire Service located a few metres away from the school did not respond as the service claimed it had no water and petrol in their fire-fighting vehicle to help put out the fire. 

The razed building was one of the major renovations works embarked upon by the current national executive members of the Old Boys Association, under the leadership of Algarkirk Gbadegesin Lawal to give some buildings in the 63-year-old school a complete facelift. 

It was gathered over N3.4 million has been injected into the burnt building, majorly out of the voluntary donations from well-spirited members of the Adventist Grammar School, and Ede Old Students Association at home and in the Diaspora. 

New Naira Notes: Ekiti residents bemoan financial institutions over scarcity

Residents of Ekiti State have bemoaned the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and Financial Institutions over its failure to circulate and dispense the new naira notes amidst the deadline.

With less than a week to the deadline for the phasing out of the old naira notes, financial institutions in Ekiti are still dispensing the old notes.

Officials of some of the banks in the state who spoke under anonymity complained of scarcity of the new naira notes.

Speaking with some of the customers of the financial institutions, they lamented that banks ought to have stopped loading old notes in their ATM since it would not be accepted as legal tender by end of this month.

A Public Affairs Analyst and former Commissioner for Information in Ekiti State, Mr Lanre Ogunsuyi, called for synergy between CBN and commercial banks on how to ensure that the policy did not affect Nigerians especially those living in the rural areas.

I Have Not Disappointed Anybody – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said he has served Nigerians to the best of his ability, stressing that he has not disappointed anyone.

The President stated this during a courtesy call on the Emir of Bauchi, His Royal Highness (Dr) Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu in continuation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential and gubernatorial campaign rallies.

"I normally call on Emirs and Chiefs, whether on political or personal tours to States to show my gratitude,” Buhari was quoted as saying in a statement by his spokesman, Femi Adesina.

"I like to mention that between 2003 and 2011, I visited all the local governments, and in 2019, when I was seeking my re-election for a second term, I visited all the States of the Federation and the people that turned out to see me were more than what anyone could buy or force and there, I made a promise and pledge that I will serve Nigeria and Nigerians to the best of my ability and so far, I have not disappointed anybody.”

While acknowledging the warm reception accorded him and the continued show of love by Nigerians, Buhari said that the huge crowd that welcomed him wherever he went, was a demonstration of genuine love and loyalty.

Lagos SDP chair, excos join PDP, say ‘we find party attractive’

Dabiraoluwa Adeyinka, Lagos chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and some other state executives have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking on Monday, Adeyinka said the decision was based on the personalities of the party’s candidates in the state.

She said the group consulted widely before settling for the PDP, having considered the reality on the ground.

“We are proud of this and find it convincing. We find a lot of attractions in PDP,” she said.

"The likes of Funke Akindele are role models for us. She likes us as youths, she is accessible and a young mind, who has impacted the system in Nigeria by creating employment for Nigerian youths.

“She is doing wonderfully well and she is a sellable youth. She is a voice for women and a voice for the Nigerian youths.

“She is a motivation even without meeting her in person. We want to join forces with an entity like that.”

Lagos Was A Super Slum Until Tinubu Became Governor, Says Shettima

The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu was key to the transformation of Lagos State, according to Kashim Shettima.

“When Asiwaju became the governor of Lagos, you and I know that the fear of Lagos for the average northerner was the beginning of wisdom,” the APC vice presidential candidate said during a Lagos State banquet for President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday.

“Lagos was a super slum but because of the quality of this man’s ideas, Lagos is now the third-largest economy in Africa. From N600m, Lagos government is now generating N61b every month as the internally generated revenue, and Lagos is now projected to be the third-largest economy by the end of the decade."

The former Borno State governor, who says Tinubu can bring his wealth of experience to bear if elected as Nigeria’s president next month, called on voters to queue behind the APC flagbearer.
