The candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in the November 6 Anambra governorship election, Dr Obiora Okonkwo, says he will not do anything without consulting academics if elected the governor of the state.
Daily Trust reported that the ZLP governorship candidate made the promise during a Town Hall Meeting with the Nnamdi Azikwe University Community on the state of polity at the institution’s auditorium, Awka, on Wednesday, October 20.
Okonkwo said research was critical to quality leadership just as he alleged that the state is not on track due to negligence of those in the universities and research institutes.
He said if he becomes governor, he will give research grants to the academics and researchers to grow the system for the benefit of all.
Okonkwo said:“If I become the governor of Anambra state ,I will not do anything without consulting you. Academics are needed in driving the state economy of any country."
The ZLP governorship candidate said, if elected, he would look at rural development, peace and security, youth empowerment in the state.
Okonkwo said if the people have what is due to them there would not have been any cause for agitation and insecurity in the state and the country in general.
He said the state has not had economic growth despite having produced many billionaires whose businesses are scattered all over the world.
The governorship candidate added that if he is elected as governor, in less than six months, the crime rate will drop by 50% in Anambra .
Similarly, the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) for the Saturday, November 6, governorship election in Anambra state, Senator Uba, has said that he would conduct local government election within the first six months of his first tenure as governor, The Nigerian Tribune reports.
Nigerian Tribune reports that he noted the local government is the pillar of rural development, stating that the Obiano administration had deprived people of the state of the grassroots governance that they deserve.
Senator Uba, made this disclosure while addressing party faithful at a joint meeting with local government and ward executives of the party in Awka, on Sunday, October 17.
He said:“My administration will conduct local government election within my first six months as governor of Anambra State because that is the best way to develop the local government and the rural areas.”
While the guber candidate urged the party faithful to join his campaign train and ensure they deliver in their respective wards, he assured that his party would not give room to any form of malpractice prepared by the rival political parties.
The APC governorship candidate said votes must count in the election and nobody should be deceived that somebody will be in the comfort of his room and write the results, Daily Trust also reported.
Meanwhile, the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has revealed that they are well prepared to take over the mantle of leadership from ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
The Nation reports that the party said its candidate, Valentine Ozigbo, would have landslide victory in the election.
High Chief Chuks Benson Anaje, the coordinator of Ozigbo Youth Vanguard and chairman of aggrieved councillors in the state, made this declaration on Monday, October 11, while addressing party faithful at his home in Awka.
He emphasised that the power of incumbency would notysave APGA in the election.
Anaje said:“When he (Ozigbo) came here, Umujagwo my village in Awka, he told us that he would do everything possible to give Awka a capital city that befits it.
“He has promised to ensure adequate road networks,security, infrastructure and a whole lot of other programmes that will touch the life of every Anambrarian and all those resident in the State positively.
“He is a gentleman and we know he will fulfill all his promises.”
The campaign coordinator assured the people that Ozigbo would make a difference, if elected governor next month.
He urged the voters to elect the PDP candidate to serve them by voting for him massively on November 6.
