2020 WASSCE to Commence in September as WAEC and FG agrees on a new date

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is an examination board established by law to determine the examinations required in the public interest in the English-speaking West African countries, to conduct the examinations and to award certificates comparable to those of equivalent examining authorities internationally.

2020 WASSCE was ealier scheduled to begin on August 4, but Federal Government of Nigeria kicked against it, giving reasons that the students are not fully prepared and some are yet to Complete their syllabus.

Other reasons includes:

They want their students to be fully protected from this ravaging pandemic.

Further More, they also give every school the condition that must be met before schools

can be fully reopened.

The Federal Government and West African Examination Council (WAEC) have agreed to shift the date for the commencement of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) from the August 4.

The new date for the examination is September 5, 2020.

This was announced by the Minister of state for Education on Friday.

He also stated that both parties have agreed to discuss with the four other countries involved about the new stipulated examination date.


"Parents should bear in mind that the safety of our students and teachers is paramount as we work assiduously towards the speedy reopening of our schools for the exit classes to take external examinations.

Parents should also ensure their Children take extra classes until school is fully reopened
