The University of Jos, Plateau State, has been at the receiving end of a series of crises in recent times. In the past one year, the University has been shut down many times, following increased tension and clashes in the State. This week, uprisings in the State resulted in the University being shut down indefinitely, leading to increased calls from some quarters for the evacuation of students, pending when the violence subsides.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), in its reaction to the crises, called on the Federal Government to secure the University community, before its next reopening. ASUU also expressed concern about how the University suddenly becomes a target whenever violence ensues in the State.
Furthermore, the Ohaneze Youth Council (OYC) in a recent statement, called on the South-East Governors to immediately evacuate Igbo Students from the University, as Benue and Kogi Governments have already evacuated theirs, according to the OYC.

Now, I think Igbo Governors should take this advice and immediately evacuate Igbo students from the University, pending when the violence has subsided. They should follow the footsteps of their Benue and Kogi counterparts, who understand that for one to be educated, the environment would have to be made secure first.

The violence in Unijos has been going on for a while now. For the University to have been closed more than once this year, it shows that academic activities have been severely disrupted due to the violence; hence, there is no point living under false impression that all is well.
If students are evacuated from the University, the government would be afforded the chance to properly solve the issue from scratch, without the fear of endangering the lives of students.
Considering this, I think South-East Governors should evacuate Igbo students from the school. Moreover, other state governments should follow suit and evacuate their students from the University community, until peace returns to the region.
