The Story Behind The Establishment Of Mayflower School Ikenne By Tai Solarin A Renowned Educationist

Mayflower School Ikenne was founded by Dr Tai Solarin an illustrious Son of Ogun state who was at a time the chairman of the defunct People's Bank of Nigeria.

Prior to the establishment of Mayflower School, Tai Solarin was the principal of Molusi college in Ijebu Igbo, the position he rose to haven't served as a tutor in the college after returning from the UK where he had his University Education in Manchester.

Solarin was made the Principal of Molusi college after the former Principal, Dr Olukoya was Appointed as the new minister for Education, in the old western region.

On his assumption of office as the Principal, Solarin unilaterally made some changes to the subject coriculum of the school, a decision that does not go down well with the people of Ijebu Igbo community, due to the fact that, the school belongs to the community .

As an humanist, Solarin had a mission to re-educate the community and decided to make some changes. Tai removed morning prayer and religious studies as a subject in the school but these changes found opposition within the local community where his brother was a Reverend.

As a result of this , he decided to quit and found his own school with the approval of Awokoya the former Principal. He established Mayflower School on January 27, 1956.

The philosophy behind the establishment of the school was that of mental and religious freedom, a guiding philosophy that have seen many young Nigerian Students whom have had a success stories in their respective fields.
