WAEC EXAMINATIONS MAY STILL HOLD IN NIGERIA
The West African Examination Council have on the 8th of July release a new date for the commencement of the WAEC examination all through the participating 6 west African states, this is coming after the earlier scheduled date have been cancelled due to the ravaging coronavirus pandemic. Although the pandemic is yet to be over, however the Council have assured all stakeholders that the examination will be conducted under strict guidelines to the safety measures for preventing the spread of coronavirus.
However, the Federal government of Nigeria through the Minister of Education Prof Adamu Adamu, have publicly critize the Council for an action he tagged insensitive and went further to say that schools under the jurisdiction of the federal government will not be resuming any time soon whether for WAEC or normal session.
Of Course, the Minister of Education have been taken up on this statement by Nigerians, some in support saying it is still unsafe to open up schools for now while others are saying that the minister’s statement only shows the level of insensitivity of the government to the plight of the ordinary people, while some state government still insists that schools will be opened in their state.
My advice to students preparing to write the WAEC examinations is to be clam and keep preparing for the exam, this is because it is still very much likely for the WAEC exams to hold considering the reactions of most states government to the current decision of the federal government, and even the federal government is still in consultation with WAEC and the federal house of representative have also appealed to the federal government to reconsider their decision. So there is still much hope.
It should also be noted that Education is on the concurrent list in Nigeria, therefore both the federal and state government have power to make separate decisions that will affect only their jurisdictions, therefore if the federal government insists on not reopening schools, states government can still decide to open up schools in their states, however WAEC being a nation exam may not be conducted.
