There are currently thirty seven federal polytechnics approved by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in Nigeria. Kaduna State alone houses three of them. This makes it the state with the highest number of federal polytechnics. Interestingly, two of them are located in Kaduna City while one of them is in Zaria. Let us take a glimpse at some of these institutions.
The first among them is Kaduna Polytechnic (KADPOLY) which is located in Kaduna City. This institution is also the oldest polytechnic in the entire Northern Region of Nigeria and the second oldest in Nigeria (after Yaba College of Technology). KADPOLY was established in 1956 with the name Kaduna Technical Institute (KTI). In 1962, its name was changed to The Polytechnic, Kaduna. In 1968, the military government of Yakubu Gowon changed the name of the institution to Kaduna Polytechnic. KADPOLY, which is also the first multi-campus polytechnic in Nigeria was under the ownership of governments of the Northern states until it came under the ownership of the federal government in 1991. It is the only institution that runs ND, HND, BTech, BSc(Ed) and NCE in Nigeria.
Another polytechnic in Kaduna is Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) which is located in Zaria. This institution was established in 1964 as Nigerian Civil Aviation Training Centre (NCATC). The institution began to use the current name in 1977. Captain Alkali Mahmud Modibbo is the incumbent rector of the institution.
The third federal institution that awards National Diploma (ND) in Kaduna is the Airforce Institute of Technology (AFIT). This school was established in 1977 under the name Nigeria Air Force Technical Supply School (TSS) for training officers of the Nigerian Air Force on the basics of aircraft maintenance. The school received its current name in 2008. The institution now runs degree and post graduate programs. The current commandant of the institution is Air Vice Marshall Musbau Olumide Olatunji who is a graduate of AFIT.
