UNILORIN Decision That Only First Class Students Would Attend Their Next Convocation Is Not Fair

The University of Ilorin, based in the capital city of Kwara state, has made a decision that only first class students would attend their next convocation set to commence on the 15th of October, 2021. The news was released by the University of Ilorin's Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun. He also revealed that the grand finale of the convocation for the awards of prizes, first and postgraduate degrees and diplomas from all the 15 faculties and the postgraduates would take place on the 23rd of October, 2021.

In my opinion, this decision by the University of Ilorin is not fair. The first reason why I think it's not a fair decision is that the timing wasn't right, the students were not told from the onset, that is when they were admitted into the institution that if they didn't graduate with first class degrees, they wouldn't be allowed to attend convocation when their mates are supposed to do so. If they were told earlier when they were admitted into the institution, they would have prepared themselves more in their academics.

Another reason, why I think it's not fair is that what would become of those who had second class upper, a rank just below the First Class degree, shouldn't they be given a chance to attend their own convocation?
