After basic considerations and measures considered in the reopening of schools in Nigeria during the COVID-19 pandemic, 6 states has said they are ready to reopen schools for the preparation of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

It was part of the state government's decisions at the conclusion of a virtual meeting held in conjunction with the Committee on South West Education, Education Special Advisors and Chairs, the President of the State Universal Basic Education Council and "DAWN Commission" known as Development Agenda for Western Nigeria on Tuesday.

According to a communique made available to journalists on Wednesday by the Director-General of the Commission, Seye Oyeleye, the state commissioners has emphasized on the readiness to sit the SSCE students for the 2019/2020 WAEC examinations with strict safety precautionary measures.

The 6 South West states involved are Ekiti, Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Osun and Oyo states. In my previous article “WAEC should consider postponing resumption because of Nigeria”. The meeting pointed out some basic facts from my opinion in the article as the are said to resume August 3rd.

According to the 6 South West States, “At the least, August 3rd, resumption for final year SSS3 students, states should approach the Federal Government at the first instance seeking the postponement of the WAEC exam by at least three weeks from proposed resumption”. They also emphasized that “states should directly approach WAEC to seek an extension of the WAEC Examinations to week commencing August 24”.

"All schools, should have incident managers and wardens will be in position for each school and each classroom, before reopening. Each state is expected to initiated the idea of Quality Assurance Department to grant each school Health Compliance Certificate before reopening.

Note that this came up after the Federal Government reversed an initial decision authorizing schools to reopen for Junior Secondary School 3 and Senior Secondary School 3 students expected to take part in the Junior Secondary School Certificate and Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations respectively.
